FIFA World Cup 2026
About FIFA World Cup 2026
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's football championship organised by FIFA. It is hosted across three nations — Canada, Mexico, and the United States — making it the first World Cup shared by three countries and the second to be held partially in Mexico. The tournament expands to 48 teams for the first time, up from the 32-team format used since 1998. Sixteen host cities across the three countries stage matches between 11 June and 19 July 2026, with the final held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advance to a round of 32, after which the competition proceeds as a straight knockout through the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final. Broadcasting rights are held by separate broadcasters in each country. Major free-to-air rights-holders include BBC and ITV in the United Kingdom, TF1 in France, TV Globo and EBC in Brazil, RTVE in Spain, RAI in Italy, and Fox Sports and Telemundo in the United States. Most other markets have at least partial free-to-air coverage given the scale of the event.
